WORCESTER, MA — For the first time in Worcester, the main library will host an exhibit on loan from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

The exhibit will focus on the life and career of Buck O’Neil, a Negro Leagues player who went on to become the first Black Major League Baseball coach, and founded the Negro Leagues museum.

The Worcester Public Library exhibit is being cosponsored by the WooSox Foundation and the United Way of Central Massachusetts. O'Neil has ties to the WooSox: he worked with owner Larry Lucchino and President Charles Steinberg in the MLB, and in launching the Red Sox annual celebration of Jackie Robinson.

"Adding the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum exhibit takes our celebration to a new level, as everyone in Worcester can now visit the beautiful Worcester Public Library over the next two months and learn the story of a gentleman who was close to Jackie Robinson and who has given us first-hand stories about their lives, backgrounds, struggles, and glorious triumphs," Steinberg said in a news release.

The exhibit will have a ribbon cutting Wednesday at 4 p.m. featuring local elected officials including Mayor Joseph Petty, Councilors Khrystian King, Sean Rose and Candy Mero-Carlson, and City Manager Eric Batista. The exhibit will be open at the main library from Wednesday through Black History Month until WooSox opening day over the weekend of March 31.
