Free Parking At Worcester Lots During Storm

WORCESTER, MA — The city is opening two municipal parking lots at no charge during the upcoming storm to help residents protect their vehicles from flooding.

Free parking will be available at the 40 Highland St. lot and the 40 Salem St. McGrath Library lot from 8 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. The city said the lots are intended for people who live in flood-prone areas and do not have a more convenient parking option nearby.

This comes as Massachusetts braces for a powerful nor'easter expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region through the weekend. The storm has strengthened over the Atlantic and shifted closer to the coast, increasing the potential for heavier rain inland and damaging winds, according to Patch's latest forecast.

Widespread rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected across eastern New England, with significantly higher totals possible in parts of southeastern Massachusetts. The heaviest rain is expected Saturday and Sunday, while the storm could linger into Monday.

Vehicles parked during the free period may exit the lots without charge until noon Tuesday. Normal rates will resume at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The offer applies only to the Highland Street and McGrath lots. All other municipal garages and lots will continue charging regular rates.

Internet and power outages are possible during the storm. You can report downed power lines to 911, and report downed branches that do not pose an immediate safety risk to Worcester 311, or to 911 if 311 is unavailable.
