WORCESTER, MA — A 17-year-old girl died after she was shot early Saturday morning on Worcester's west side, police are reporting.

Worcester police went to the Mayfield Street Big Y supermarket just before 3 a.m. after getting a report that someone had been shot. They found the girl at the scene, and she was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police did not immediately announce any arrests, but did say the shooting "does not appear to be random in nature."

This is the second homicide of 2022 in Worcester. A 29-year-old died on Saturday after being shot multiple times on Christmas inside a Webster Street home.

The girl in Saturday's shooting is the youngest homicide victim in Worcester since October 2020 when Nawar Jabbar, 17, was shot and killed at a Park Avenue Wendy's. Police later arrested and charged Messiah Amankwah, 18, of Worcester, and Diomar Lopez Carrasco, 23, of Spencer, in Jabbar's killing.
