Grandmother And 3-Year-Old Hit By Car In Worcester

Two DPW workers lifted a car off of the toddler.

WORCESTER, MA — A grandmother and toddler were hit by a car on Chandler Street in Worcester on Wednesday morning.

The woman and the 3-year-old child were hit in front of the Commerce Bank Field. Worcester police said the two were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries and in stable condition — Worcester police said they are expected to survive.

Worcester police said the woman and toddler were getting ready to cross the street after a sedan stopped to let them pass. Another sedan rear ended the car closest to the pair and then hit them, police said.

The toddler was pinned under the car and two Department of Public Works workers lifted the car to free the child. The Telegram Gazette reported that the men were driving behind the car that hit the grandmother and child. The men told the outlet that the car was "flying" and as soon as they heard the toddler crying they jumped into action.

City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. made a statement in response to the incident, “Our thoughts are with the grandmother and three-year old child who were injured this morning in a frightening automobile accident on Chandler Street. We send our hopes and prayers for their speedy recovery. We also express our sincere gratitude to the City of Worcester employees who reacted selflessly in an emergency situation. Their immediate response and thoughtful actions helped prevent a more tragic outcome and serve as a source of pride for our entire City.”
