WORCESTER, MA — A state trooper arrested a Worcester man over the weekend after a traffic stop along Quinsigamond Avenue turned up an illegal gun and a small quantity of cannabis, police said.

A trooper pulled over Christian Martinez, 25, on Saturday night after a license plate check revealed the vehicle was uninsured and unregistered, police said. As the trooper prepared to have the vehicle towed, Martinez tried to take a backpack out of the car, police said.

The trooper and Martinez struggled for control of the pack, which police later found contained a pistol, about 2 ounces of marijuana and a couple of knives.

Police arrested Martinez and charged him with motor vehicle violations, weapons violations and possession of drugs with intent to distribute.
