Gunfire Between Man And Cops Leads To Attempted Murder Charge: DA

A resident in Lunenburg called about a suspicious man, leading cops into a gunfire exchange with the man.

LUNENBURG, MA—An exchange of gunfire erupted between a man and police after officers responded to a call about a suspicious man on Chase Road in Lunenburg on Friday morning, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Brian Binder, 31, whose address is unknown, was treated at the scene for a hand wound and later transported to the University of Massachusetts-Memorial Hospital in Worcester where he was treated and released into police custody.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m., Lunenburg police received a call that a suspicious man was observed near a home on Chase Road (Route 13). As officers attempted to make contact, Binder allegedly pulled a handgun from his backpack and fired at the officers. Police returned fire, striking Binder once in the hand, said the DA's release.

No police officers were wounded.

Binder ran off, heading north, and dropped his gun along the way to the woods, and was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Binder was arraigned on Friday in Fitchburg District Court. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder; two counts of assault to murder; carrying a firearm without a license; possession of ammunition without a license; aggravated resisting arrest; and possession of a loaded firearm.
