Holy Cross Football Returns Home to Face Bucknell

The Holy Cross football team returns home on Saturday, Oct. 8, when it plays host to Bucknell in a 1:05 p.m. game at Fitton Field. The contest between the Crusaders and the Bison will be shown live on Charter TV3 in Central Massachusetts, and can also be heard on WEEI 1440 AM in Worcester.
Holy Cross owns an overall record of 2-3 on the year, and stands in first place in the Patriot League with a 1-0 mark in conference games. The Crusaders are coming off a 38-28 victory over Lafayette last week, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Holy Cross currently ranks fourth in the nation with 131 first downs, while standing 20th in passing offense (284.2 yards per game).
The Holy Cross offense is led by one of the nation’s most dynamic receiving corps. Sophomore wide out Richie DiNicola currently leads the team with 36 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek ranks second with 34 catches for 395 yards and two scores, while leading the team with 651 all-purpose yards. Senior wide receiver Brendan Flaherty has missed almost two and a half games due to injury, but has still totaled 21 receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 17 times for 72 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Nick McBeath leads the team with 48 tackles and five tackles for loss, while senior free safety Luke Ford has added 36 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Senior defensive end Dewayne Cameron has recorded 30 tackles with five quarterback sacks and nine tackles for loss, and senior defensive end Ryan Smith has totaled 16 tackles with three quarterback sacks and one fumble recovery.
Bucknell currently stands 1-3 on the season, and will be playing its Patriot League opener this week. The Bison defeated Marist 26-10 to open the year, but have lost their last three games to Duquesne (30-19), Cornell (24-16) and Virginia Military Institute (23-17 in triple overtime).
“Bucknell has consistently had one of the top defenses in the league for several years,” said Holy Cross head coach Tom Gilmore. “They have shown the ability to run the ball very effectively this year, as well as to go deep with their play-action pass game. We expect a big challenge this week in our quest to improve to 2-0 in the Patriot League.”
After the contest with Bucknell, Holy Cross will remain at home to face Harvard at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.
