Housing Assistance Nonprofit Opens New Downtown Worcester Office

WORCESTER, MA — A Worcester nonprofit focused on housing stability has opened a new downtown location to make its services easier to access.

The Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance held a ribbon-cutting Wednesday at its new space at 18 Chestnut St., Suite 100, Sen. Michael Moore announced on Thursday. The downtown move places CMHA closer to residents seeking help finding or maintaining safe, stable housing.

"This move has already been so meaningful: a place where our clients can connect with services, support, and people who are here to help," CMHA wrote in an announcement. "The City of Worcester recognized the need for a one-stop center where nonprofits could come together to better serve our community, and by moving into this space, CMHA is proud to be part of bringing that vision to life."

The nonprofit provides housing counseling, homelessness prevention assistance, family shelter services and housing stabilization programs. The organization also administers HomeBASE and Residential Assistance for Families in Transition programs.

Another CMHA Project Underway In Worcester

The Chestnut Street office is separate from another major CMHA project underway in Worcester. The organization and the city broke ground earlier this year on the Worcester Resource Center at 134 Gold St., a planned centralized site for people experiencing homelessness.

The roughly 20,000-square-foot Gold Street building is expected to offer housing and employment assistance along with bathrooms, showers, laundry facilities, storage and charging stations after renovations are completed. The project was expected to open in 2026 as of May.

CMHA serves as the lead agency for the Continuum of Care, coordinated entry system and Homeless Management Information System in Worcester and Worcester County. The organization was formed in 1984 through the merger of two Worcester housing groups.
