Life-Threatening Injury in Major Route 2 Wreck

The crash happened in Gill, where Route 2 has been closed for hours.

A major wreck in a town in northwest Massachusetts has closed Route 2 for hours and resulted in a life-threatening injury.

The crash occurred Wednesday morning at approximately 10:13 a.m. Troopers responded to a serious crash in which a 1997 Geo Prizm collided with a 1999 Mack tractor-trailer.

A preliminary investigation revealed the Prizm was traveling eastbound on Route 2 in Gill "when it crossed completed into the westbound travel lane, in front of the tractor-trailer," police said in a release.

The driver of the Prizm, a 34-year-old man from Templeton, was transported by helicopter to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 29-year-old man from Millers Falls, was not injuried.

Route 2 will be closed for several more hours. Traffic is being detoured eastbound at the Turner Falls bridge and westbound at the Route 63.

Gill is about 60 miles northwest of Worcester, just south of Vermont.
