WORCESTER, MA — Worcester police have arrested a local man in connection to a gunfire incident in the downtown area Thursday morning.

Shots rang out around 11:30 a.m. at the north end of Main Street in the area between the Worcester County courthouse and Lincoln Square. No one was injured in the shooting, according to police.

At the same time, Worcester police alerted officers about a Toyota sedan seen near where the shooting took place. Late Thursday night, an officer spotted the sedan along Main Street and tried to pull the driver over.

The driver continued onto Glenwood Street, where two passengers jumped out and ran. The Worcester officer tried to chase them, and the Toyota driver left the area, but was later pulled over along Southbridge Street.

The driver, a 21-year-old Prentice Street resident, was found with a handgun outfitted with a switch that allows it be fired automatically, police said. The man was charged with multiple gun law violations, including possession of a machine gun and possession of a gun with a defaced serial number.
