WORCESTER, MA — An ambulance company that served cities and towns across western and central Massachusetts will pay a $2.6 million fine over accusations that the company over billed MassHealth, Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell said Tuesday.

Leominster-based MedStar Ambulance and affiliated Fitchburg Emergency Medical Services, MedStar EMS, MetroWest Emergency Medical Services and Pioneer Valley Emergency Medical Services submitted claims to MassHealth that were for services that were more expensive than necessary, Campbell said in a news release.

The AG also said Medstar provided non-emergency ambulance services without proper documentation.

On top of the monetary settlement, the company will also update its internal policies to comply with MassHealth requirements. MassHealth is the state's Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program service.
