Milford Town Employee Receives Portuguese Heritage Award

MILFORD, MA — A Milford town employee was honored this week at the Massachusetts State House for her service to the community and the commonwealth.

Melissa Tomas, senior paralegal and office manager in Milford’s Legal Department, was named a recipient of the Portuguese Heritage Award during the 42nd Annual Heritage Day of Portugal celebration Tuesday in the House Chamber at the State House, State Rep. Brian Murray (10th Worcester) announced on Thursday. The annual event honors the history, culture and contributions of Portuguese American communities across Massachusetts.

Tomas has worked in Milford’s Legal Department since 2014, helping manage legal matters involving the town. The town’s staff directory lists Tomas as senior paralegal and office manager in the Legal Department, according to the Town of Milford.

Tomas also serves as clerk to the Zoning Board of Appeals, helping process applications for relief submitted by residents. She also works as the town’s legal liaison to the Human Resources Department, assisting with collective bargaining and personnel matters.

The Portuguese Heritage Award recognizes Portuguese Americans who work to improve their communities and the commonwealth. The Heritage Day of Portugal celebration is organized by the Portuguese American Legislative Caucus, whose 2026 event was co-chaired by Rep. Antonio F.D. Cabral and Sen. Michael Rodrigues, according to the Legislature.

"This award recognizes the contributions of Portuguese Americans who strive to succeed in making their communities and the Commonwealth a better place," Rep. Murray wrote in the announcement. "Melissa handles all of her duties with dedication and pride, along with a strong sense of respect and appreciation for the community."
