RUTLAND, MA — The only local brewery with its own herd of bison is expanding.

Milk Room Brewing, located at Alta Vista farm in Rutland, announced plans this week to open an indoor location at East View Farm, also in Rutland. The new location will be special for Milk Room founder Kevin Jarvi: his family used to own the place.

"We are incredibly proud and honored to be presented with this opportunity as East View is a special place for the owner of Milk Room, Kevin. That farm was originally owned by his family and he learned the ways of a farmer working there as a kid," the brewery said on social media this week.

Milk Room's Alta Vista location is entirely outdoors, with a deck patio and tables spread out across pastures off Hillside Road. That means the brewery only sells cans in the colder months with no sit-down service. When Milk Room opened in 2020, Jarvi discovered he would need to equip the interior with sprinklers for indoor service at an estimated $1 million, according to Edible Worcester.

The new location will complement the Alta Vista site. East View Farm, located along Route 56, abuts Alta Vista across a creek and a stand of trees.
