Mirick O'Connell Celebrates 100th Anniversary and Announces Boston Expansion

Since its founding in 1916, Mirick O'Connell has established itself as one of the leading business-focused law firms in the region.

Mirick, O'Connell, DeMallie & Lougee, LLP, a full service law firm with offices in Worcester, Westborough and Boston, is pleased to announce the celebration of its 100th anniversary. Since its founding in 1916, Mirick O’Connell has established itself as one of the leading business-focused law firms in the region, focused on offering legal counsel in a variety of practice areas, and giving back to the local community through numerous philanthropic initiatives. The firm will host a client appreciation reception and an employee appreciation outing in June.

“Over the past century, Mirick O’Connell has evolved from a family-centered law firm into a regional, mid-size firm representing businesses and individuals throughout the region,” said managing partner David E. Surprenant. “We have served our clients, referral sources and community with great pride, and continue to grow our success and reputation based on a key cornerstone of our firm: providing excellent service and value to our clients. We are grateful to our clients and the community for their trust in us over the past 100 years, and we look forward to continuing to meet and exceed the highest standards of excellence as we begin our second century in business.”

As part of the celebration, the firm also today announced the expansion of its Boston presence with the opening of a new office at 175 Federal Street. “Our new Boston space is located directly across from South Station,” said Joseph H. Baldiga, a partner and marketing chair at the firm. “The MBTA's nonstop express train from Worcester to Boston makes it very convenient for our attorneys and clients to travel between our offices. We are now just one stop away.”

Mirick O’Connell currently has more than 65 attorneys across three offices, and specializes in practices including Business and Reorganizations, Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits, Litigation and Trusts and Estates. In 2016, Worcester Business Journal named Mirick O’Connell “Best Law Firm to Serve Businesses,” and in 2014 named the firm a top place to work.

In addition to the firm’s reputation among business clients, it also places a strong focus on community involvement and mentoring. A staple of the firm’s community service is participating in the United Way’s annual workplace campaign and Day of Caring, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to build playhouses for disadvantaged children, and participating in several community walks such as the Central Massachusetts Heart Walk, the UMass Medicine Cancer Walk and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

In celebration of its 100th Anniversary, Mirick O’Connell recently launched a yearlong initiative called “#100ThankYous!” to highlight the various ways the firm has given back to the community, partnered with clients and shown appreciation for its clients and employees. Through the initiative, in 2016 the firm has participated in the American Heart Association’s National Go Red for Women Day; provided complimentary educational seminars for its clients; sponsored chambers of commerce events including its signature annual Cinco de Mayo business after-hours event in support of the Milford Area Chamber of Commerce; sponsored Working for Worcester’s Build Day; and hosted a luncheon for its attorneys and staff in honor of Administrative Professionals Day. The firm will continue to highlight these efforts on its website and Facebook page.

History of Mirick O’Connell

The firm was founded in 1916 by George Hammond Mirick. George's professional career included service as president of the Worcester County Bar Association and as a life trustee of Clark University. In 1930, George was joined in the practice by Paul Revere O'Connell. Setting the standard for the firm's commitment to our communities, Paul's professional career included service as the assistant city solicitor for the City of Worcester, as the director for many local businesses, as a trustee for two banks, and as a fellow of the American College of Probate Counsel.

Gardener Graves DeMallie-the third named partner-joined the firm in 1936. His legal career was interrupted by lengthy service to the nation during World War II as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Following the end of the war, he rejoined the firm and went on to serve as a member of the Worcester City Council, as the director of many local businesses and charitable organizations in the region, and as a fellow of the American College of Probate Counsel.

Laurence Hodgdon Lougee began practicing law in 1935. His legal career was also interrupted by service as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During his naval service, Laurence fought in both the European and Pacific theaters. Following completion of his honorable service, he joined the firm and later served as vice president of the Worcester County Bar Association, as president of the Massachusetts Bar Association, as a member of the American Bar Association's House of Delegates, and as a founding trustee of the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Foundation. Laurence also devoted countless hours to volunteer service as the director of many local businesses and charitable organizations.

The Firm has been privileged to see successive Mirick, O'Connell, DeMallie, and Lougee generations join the Firm. David L. Lougee and John O. Mirick are currently in practice at the Firm. Paul Revere O'Connell, Jr. recently retired.

The Firm moved into the 100 Front Street building in 1970, and continues to maintain its headquarters in Worcester, Mass.
