Naked, Drunk, And Fast: Driver Nabbed Going 105 mph, Police Say

A 24-year-old man was allegedly going 105 mph in a 45 mph zone. Also, he was naked and had beer bottles everywhere.

CHICOPEE, MA — A naked drunk driver was arrested Tuesday after blazing through a work zone on I-91 in Whately at well more than double the speed limit in a Ford pickup, state police said. When he was arrested, he was allegedly naked and was a couple bottles shy of a 12-pack.

Alexander Shanwenda, 24, of Chicopee was charged with OUI, operating to endanger, marked lanes violation and speeding in a construction zone.

A trooper on patrol on I-91 South was advised of a black pickup truck operating erratically and speeding. The trooper identified the pickup and saw it nearly crash into a box truck when it changed lanes without signaling and accelerating to 105 mph in a 45 mph construction zone, police said.

The pickup slowed in traffic in Northampton, where the trooper pulled it over. The trooper noticed Shanwenda wearing no clothes, just pair of work pants over his lap, and an empty bottle in the bed of the truck, police said. Shanwenda allegedly seemed drunk.

The trooper — after asking Shanwenda to put on pants — requested license and registration. He couldn't produce registration, then proceeded to fail his field sobriety tests.

Troopers later located two six-packs of beer that contained five full bottles and three empty bottles, with the other four bottles missing, police said.

Shanwenda's bail was set at personal recognizance plus the $40 bail fee. He will be arraigned in Holyoke District Court.
