Police Pull Over Moped, Find 2 Illegal Guns

The Gang Unit nabbed a man for possession of illegal firearms.

WORCESTER, MA—Another gun is off the street thanks to the Worcester Police Department's Gang Unit.

On Monday, May 30, at approximately 6:30 p.m., members of the unit patrolled in the area of Dorchester Street and saw a man stopped on a moped at the intersection of Dorchester and Vernon Streets.

The driver, later identified as Devon Carpenter, 24, 82 Fox St., Worcester, pulled several driving violations, and officers pulled him over near 34 Dorchester St., police said.

When he stopped, officers said Carpenter jumped off the moped and backed away from it, indicating that he might flee. Carpenter told officers that he did not have a license, but did have a permit in the seat of the moped. Officers took his keys so they could get the ID from under the seat, and when doing so, they found a backpack. Officers opened the bag and discovered a metallic Ruger “Single-Six” .22 caliber revolver and a handgun style BB gun.

A check through CJIS revealed that Carpenter’s license to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts is suspended. The check also revealed that Carpenter does not have a license to carry a firearm. Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene and recovered the firearm.

Carpenter was arrested and charged with Carrying a Firearm without a License, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License, Operating a Moped without a Helmet, and Right Turn Violation. He was arraigned on Tuesday in Worcester District Court.
