Ramps, Areas Of I-290 And Route 9 Closed For Construction
Drivers take note. There will be overnight construction on 290 and Route 9 in Worcester.

WORCESTER, MA—The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that intermediate paving operations have been scheduled beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, for the Belmont Street Bridge Project and related project areas in Worcester.
The paving operations end at 5 a.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 23. During this time, traffic on Belmont Street (Route 9) will continue to flow but will be restricted to a single lane in each direction guided by barrels, cones, and appropriate signage. There will be brief closures of side streets adjoining Belmont Street to allow pavement to be placed and cool to a drivable condition, said the announcement.
During the course of the night, the ramps to and from I-290 will be subject to temporary closure to allow the ramps to be poured and cool to drivable conditions. During the closure of the westbound on-ramp, traffic should continue to East Central Street to access I-290. During the closure of the eastbound off-ramp, traffic should continue to Exit 16 (East Central Street) to access Lincoln Square and Route 9.
The following roadways will be impacted:
- Both directions of Belmont Street from the eastern (towards Lake Quinsigamond) limit of work adjacent to UMass Memorial Hospital to the western (towards Lincoln Square) limit of work adjacent to the Worchester Housing Authority property;
- I-290 within the project area;
- The on and off-ramps to and from I-290; and,
- All segments of side streets meeting Belmont Street which have been impacted by the project.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed, exercise caution, and pay close attention to signage and directions by police while traversing the work zone.
Upcoming construction operations for this project finishing paving the entire project area and removing all construction related equipment.
