WORCESTER, MA — Robyn Kennedy, the winner of Tuesday's 1st Worcester District state Senate primary, boasted that she and campaign volunteers knocked on about 13,000 doors ahead of election day.

That boots-on-the-ground work appears to have paid off, with Kennedy taking a more than 10-point victory over six-term Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, according to unofficial election results.

In Worcester — the largest part of a senate district that also includes Boylston, West Boylston, Northborough, Berlin and Bolton — Kennedy won 24 out of 38 voting precincts, including a 10-vote win in Petty's home precinct in the Forest Grove neighborhood.

On top of winning Worcester by about 725 votes, Kennedy also carried Boylston, Northborough, Berlin and Bolton. Petty's sole win in the primary was in West Boylston; he took the town by 121 votes.

In Worcester, Petty won six voting precincts by single-digit margins. His biggest win was in Ward 2, Precinct 4 north of Lincoln Street and east of Burncoat with a 64-vote margin. The strip of Worcester precincts between Indian Lake and the Shrewsbury line was a core area of support for Petty, and is represented by District 1 Councilor Sean Rose, who endorsed Petty ahead of the primary.

The largest win in any precinct on Tuesday was in Ward 1, Precinct 4, a reliably high turnout area west of Bancroft Tower and south of Salisbury Street centered around the Congregation Beth Israel temple, which is also a polling site.

In the 2021 municipal election, Petty earned the most votes of any candidate in Ward 1, Precinct 4 in both the mayoral and at-large city council races. But on Tuesday, Kennedy won the precinct by 178 votes, according to results.
