Heavy rain and strong winds are the main threats with the afternoon storms, according to forecasters.
WORCESTER, MA — A wave of strong to severe thunderstorms will likely sweep across the area on Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The storms will sweep in from the west between 3 and 11 p.m., and the biggest threats include strong winds and heavy downpours.
Although the Worcester area will be in the path of the storms, the strongest weather will likely impact the northwest part of the state, according to forecasts.

"Due to the scattered nature of the storms, not everyone will see severe weather, but storms that do form have the potential to produce damaging winds," the Massachusetts Emergency Management Authority said Thursday in a tweet.
Thursday's storms will also signal a change in the local weather pattern. Temperatures are set to start climbing back toward the 90-degree mark on Friday, and it'll stay that way through the weekend, according to forecasts.
