Historic Stearns Tavern Being Moved to Coes Pond

Drivers take note: there are some temporary closings this week.

WORCESTER, MA—The old Stearns Tavern is moving from its home on Park Ave. to its new spot on Coes Pond.

According to a social media post by Mayor Joe Petty, the Seven Hills Foundation will use the building to "provide job training and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, operating a community center and cafe. An all-ages, universally-accessible playground will adjoin the tavern, and officials touted the project as part of a larger effort to restore the bath houses and beach at the pond."

Petty said that 27 private-sector partners, two nonprofits, multiple city and state officials and departments, four utility companies, and three unions collaborated to move the tavern to the location of the former Coes Knife Factory on Mill Street and on the shore of Coes Pond.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, the following streets will be temporarily closed to move the building:

  • Park Avenue northbound, from Main Street to Mill Street
  • Mill Street from Park Avenue to Ball Street
  • Coes Street from Park Avenue to Mill Street

The whole trip is expected to take about one hour, after which Park Avenue may be able to re-open sooner than one hour, though timing is fluid and some streets could stay closed for longer.

If it rains, the move will take place on Wednesday.
