WORCESTER, MA — A man is facing charges for a shooting that occurred earlier this month during a group fight on Grafton Street in Worcester.
On Dec. 4, Worcester police responded to the Mobil Station at 352 Grafton St. for reports of a large fight. Within minutes, police found that a victim had been shot in the leg. During the past week, investigators found that during that fight, a man (later identified as 27-year-old Michael Macgrory of Worcester) pulled out a knife and attempted to stab another male (later identified as 25-year-old Luis Morales-Quintana of Worcester). Morales-Quintana then pulled out a firearm and shot Macgrory once in the leg.
Macgrory was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon on Dec. 9.
Around 12:45 a.m. on Dec. 10. an officer was working a detail at Lava Lounge located at 2 Washington Square. Earlier in the evening, the officer became aware that there was probable cause to arrest Morales-Quintana, a frequent patron of the Lava Lounge, in connection with the Grafton Street shooting.
Morales–Quintana initially provided the officer with a fictitious name when confronted, and when the officer again asked him his name, Morales-Quintana pushed the officer and attempted to flee. The officer tackled Morales-Quintana, but Morales-Quintana was able to break free by kicking and kneeing the officer, said police. A staff member attempted to assist the officer in controlling the suspect, and the suspect violently attacked the staff member, knocking him to the ground.
The officer used OC spray on Morales-Quintana, and was able to arrest him with help from a staff member and other officers.
After he was under arrest, Morales-Quintana began yelling racial slurs at the arresting officer.
Morales-Quintana is being charged with Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (2 counts), Assault and Battery by Gun, Firearm Use in a Felony, Civil rights Violation, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession of Ammunition w/out an FID, Discharging a Firearm w/in 500 ft of a Dwelling, Disorderly Conduct, and Threatening to Commit a Crime.
