TRAFFIC ALERT: Belmont Street Bridge Closed This Week for Reconstruction

The second phase of the Belmont Street Bridge takes place this week.

WORCESTER, MA—The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced that the placement of the concrete for the deck of the first half of the new Belmont Street Bridge will begin on June 15.

This action represents a major milestone in the project and sets up the move to the project’s second phase later this summer.

Beginning on Wednesday at 6 a.m., concrete will be placed on the onramp to I-290 westbound.

For six hours, the onramp will be closed to traffic to accommodate trucks delivering concrete. Two lanes eastbound and one lane westbound will be maintained across the existing Belmont Street Bridge during the concrete operation.

Drivers should allow for extra travel time and follow all traffic control signage as well as police details.

Any motorist seeking to access I-290 westbound from Belmont Street can access the highway by following this route:

  • Continue past the closed entrance on your right;
  • Proceed along Belmont Street eastbound passing Bell Pond on your right
  • Pass Prentice Street, Liscomb Street, and Daniels Street, all on your right
  • Pass through the signal at Hospital Drive immediately after Daniels Street and bear to the right
  • At the U-Haul lot, make a sharp right turn onto Shrewsbury Street
  • Continue on Shrewsbury Street, as you approach the I-290 overpass, bear right;
  • In the roundabout at Union Station, take your first exit onto Summer Street
  • Once on Summer Street, bear right and follow the sign to I-290 westbound

Access to the Worcester Housing Authority site will be maintained during the concrete operation.
