WORCESTER, MA — The superhero-themed UMass Cancer Walk raised over $650,000 this past weekend, according to UMass Chan Medical School.

The 26th annual UMass Cancer Walk presented by Harr Toyota drew about 2,000 participants to Polar Park in Worcester on Sunday to support adult and pediatric cancer research and clinical trials at UMass Chan Medical School.

The event honored patients, survivors, family members, researchers, health care providers, sponsors and volunteers.

All donations to the event support cancer research at UMass Chan, where more than 150 clinical trials are currently underway.

"These trials, conducted at both the local and national levels, are designed to evaluate new cancer treatment options, improve surgeries and identify new ways to predict and diagnose different types of cancers," according to a statement from the school. "These resources enhance patient care by offering access to the most advanced diagnosis and treatment options. Breakthrough treatment options have the potential to save the lives of patients in Central Massachusetts and around the world."

The UMass Cancer Walk was started in 1999 and "has become the largest, one-day, single-location fundraising event in the area, and supporters have raised more than $16 million for cancer research."
