WESTBOROUGH, MA — Drivers on I-495 southbound will encounter overnight lane closures next week as traffic moves into its final alignment near the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The shift is scheduled from 8 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday between an area just south of Route 9 and just beyond the Fruit Street overpass in Hopkinton. At least one southbound lane will remain open throughout the work, according to MassDOT.

All three southbound lanes are expected to open in the new alignment by 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The connection from I-495 southbound to the I-90 eastbound and westbound ramps at Exit 58 will also move approximately 1,000 feet south to its permanent location.

Signs, law enforcement details and electronic messages will guide drivers through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays, reduce their speed and use caution.

If weather prevents the work Monday night, it will instead take place from Tuesday evening, Aug. 4, through Wednesday morning, Aug. 5. The schedule may also change because of an emergency.

I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project

The work is part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project in Hopkinton and Westborough.

The project is meant to provide a safer and more efficient interchange, replace the existing interchange, eliminate the former toll booth area and weaving areas, improve ramp spacing and acceleration and deceleration lanes and add an auxiliary lane from I-495 northbound to Route 9, according to MassDOT.

New bridges are also being built on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 northbound over Flanders Road and on Fruit Street, according to MassDOT.

MassDOT says construction is ongoing and the project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
