What's That Truck With The Round, Broomy Things On It!?

It's true. The sweeping has begun in Worcester, and here are the streets the DPW is hitting next.

WORCESTER, MA—The annual Spring Street Sweeping program started the first week in April and takes 8 to 10 weeks to complete. DPW&P sweeps arterial streets from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and residential streets from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Beginning Friday, May 19, the DPW is sweeping the areas of Flagg Street, Pleasant Street, Toru Fort Lane, Dawson Road, the Holden town line and Salisbury Street, including the Barry Road area.

Street crews post signs on residential streets prior to its scheduled sweeping to advise abutters.

Residents can tune into cable channel 192 to see weekly updates of the areas where DPW&P crews will be sweeping streets.

The DPW reminds residents that each year it receives complaints from people disturbed that residents place debris and yard waste into the street after their streets have been swept.

"In addition to compromising the clean-up efforts made in a neighborhood, re-sweeping adds a substantial cost and delays completion of the sweeping program. This action is also a violation of City ordinances."

Abutters are requested to sweep sidewalks and esplanade areas in anticipation of our street sweepers. Citizens are also asked to clean sidewalks in front of vacant lots and public areas like traffic islands. Their cooperation would be most helpful since wind-borne litter carried from adjacent sidewalks and parking areas can nullify the results of a well-swept street.

The public is also asked to cooperate by moving parked cars that may interfere with both the arterial and residential street sweeping program. Vehicles that interfere with the street sweeping will be tagged and may be towed. The fine for interfering with street sweeping is $50. In addition to the high visibility signs used in prior years, DPW&P will use a Reverse 911 system to notify residents of neighborhoods where parking compliance has been less than satisfactory that sweeping crews will be entering their neighborhoods. A pre-recorded message will inform residents in these particular neighborhoods that they should cooperate with the temporary no parking restrictions as sweeping crews clean their streets.
