Woman Arrested During Eviction Protest In Worcester

WORCESTER, MA—A woman is facing charges after several gathered to protest an eviction that was ordered in Worcester.

On Thursday, May 4, a Worcester Police officer was working a private detail to keep the peace during an eviction proceeding. The officer was there to make sure the firm hired to conduct the eviction was not hindered by protesters that were at the scene. A lawyer representing the mortgage company was present and met with the officer.

The lawyer had a court order from the Worcester Housing Court to change the locks and go into the house and remove the resident's belongings.

A moving truck had arrived at the scene. The movers were standing by the truck waiting to enter the home and there were approximately 12 protestors gathered in the driveway of the home, trying to prevent the movers from going in.

The officer asked the group several times if anyone owned the vehicles. No one responded. The officer explained that the vehicles will be issued a citation and towed if they were not removed. A few more minutes went by before the owners came forward and moved the cars.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., a locksmith at the scene began to work on one of the locks. A Constable was with the locksmith. At this time a female, later identified as Lori Cairns, 58, Chalmers Road, Worcester, attempted to block the locksmith and the Constable from gaining access to the home. Cairns continued to block the entrance for several minutes by trying to push and elbow the workers. Cairns was asked to cease her behavior. She refused all lawful requests.

Cairns was placed under arrest and charged with Assault and Battery, Trespassing, Disorderly Conduct and Assault and Battery on a Person over 60-years-old.

There were no injuries reported.

Cairns was arraigned Thursday at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
