Worcester Becomes A 'Dementia Friendly' City

Mayor Petty signed a proclamation on Tuesday declaring it Dementia Friendly Worcester Day.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester is embracing its new label as a Dementia Friendly City. Mayor Joseph Petty signed a proclamation on Tuesday declaring June 25, 2019 Dementia Friendly Worcester Day. The proclamation was pushed by the Dementia Friendly Worcester Action Team.

The action team was formed in March with the goal of increasing education and awareness about dementia across the city. The team represents various different sectors of the city including transportation, housing and health and human services.

The proclamation signing was accompanied by a kickoff event at the Worcester Senior Center. The city has received an official recognition from Dementia Friendly America.

The city has an estimated 37,000 residents age 60 and older. Dementia-friendly cities offer dementia friendly services and advocate on behalf of residents living with dementia.

Worcester is now one of 150 cities and towns in Massachusetts that is part of Dementia Friendly Massachusetts.
