Accreditation is voluntary for Massachusetts police departments. To earn and maintain the designation, departments must demonstrate that officers and staff follow written policies, document their compliance and remain current with professional standards.

The accreditation process includes an outside review of the department’s policies and practices based on standards shared by law enforcement agencies across Massachusetts.
