Prison For Man Charged In Worcester Firefighter's Death
Momoh Kamara, 24, will go to prison for at least 14 years for his role in the death of Worcester Firefighter Christopher Roy.
WORCESTER, MA — A man charged in connection to the 2018 death of a Worcester firefighter reached a plea deal on Friday that will mean at least 14 years in prison.
Momoh Kamara, 24, was sentenced to between 14 and 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter, arson, armed burglary and malicious destruction of a vehicle, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.
Prosecutors said Kamara started a fire in the basement of a home along Lowell Street early in the morning on Dec. 9, 2018. Firefighter Christopher Roy died of smoke inhalation after battling the fire.
Kamara has been in custody since March 2019. He was set to go to trial this spring, and his attorneys had in January sought to move the trial out of the Worcester area. Kamara's attorneys said the West Boylston resident would not get a fair trial in the area due to media coverage, and the sensitivity about firefighter deaths.
Roy died almost exactly one year before Lt. Jason Menard died fighting a fire along Stockholm Street. Worcester Firefighter Jon Davies died in a blaze in 2011, just over a decade after the Cold Storage fire that killed six Worcester firefighters.
