WORCESTER, MA — A 5-year-old Worcester girl died Monday, nearly one month after she was hit by an SUV driver while crossing Stafford Street, her family says.

Candice Asare-Yeboah was crossing Stafford Street on April 18 with her mother, Asha Nyarki Asare, after visiting a salon on a shopping trip. Her father, Simon Yeboah, has said that the SUV driver apparently did not see the pair crossing the busy roadway.

The driver, Christopher Remillard, 57, of Leicester, is now facing a vehicular homicide charge along with driving violations included speeding and negligent operation, according to reports.

"Our baby Candice gained her angel wings a few hours ago, and we are devastated as a family. She fought so hard to live, but her injuries made it impossible for her beautiful life to continue," the family said in an update on a GoFundMe fundraiser page Monday.

Asha Nyarki Asare was also seriously injured, but returned home from the hospital on May 9, according to the family.

The over $15,000 the family raised for Yeboah's hospitalization will now go to her funeral, the family reported.

"We have several unanswered questions and don't even know who to ask. The pain is unbearable. But we take consolation in the memories we have of her short life with us and her blessing to others," aunt Odomay Sika Maame said on the fundraiser page.
