Worcester Hatchet Man Charged After Armed Robbery

A 28-year-old Worcester man was arrested and charged after police say he was walking around near the Becker College campus with a hatchet.

WORCESTER, MA — A Worcester man suspected in an armed robbery was arrested and charged Sunday night after police caught him running around near the Becker College campus with a hatchet.

The incident began around 8 p.m. Sunday when a man wielding a knife forced another man into the vestibule of a building near 1 Irving St. The would-be robber tried to take the victim's phone, but the victim was able to get away first, police said.

A short time later, police got a call about a man with a hatchet near Elm and West streets. Police found the man, identified as Edwin Reyes, of Cutler Street, hiding in a driveway at Pleasant and Fruit streets.

Reyes was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, intimidation of a witness, assault to rob and trespassing.
