WORCESTER, MA — Worcester residents will join people in hundreds of other cities and towns across the country in protesting a war with Iran. An anti-war demonstration is planned for Thursday afternoon at Worcester's Lincoln Square.

"We will not be forced into another war. On Thursday, Jan. 9, at 5 p.m. local time, the anti-war majority in this country will get visible to oppose war and say #NoWarWithIran," the event page for the Worcester demonstration reads.

There are other demonstrations planned in local communities on Thursday, including in Stow, Framingham, and Milford.

Fears over a war with Iran began last Thursday when President Donald Trump ordered the military to kill Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani. Fears increased on Tuesday night when Iran struck back, firing 16 missiles at two bases in Iraq that house U.S. troops.

On Wednesday, Trump promised more sanctions against Iran, and warned that he would not allow the nation to develop nuclear weapons.

Other events nearby for the "day of action" against war in Iran include:

  • Thoughts and Prayers for Action: Framingham City Hall Memorial Building, 150 Concord St., Framingham
  • No War with Iran! Protest: Milford Town Hall, 52 Main St, Milford
  • Peace Vigil: First Parish Church of Stow & Acton 353 Great Road, Stow

All of Thursday's events, including the one in Worcester, begin at 5 p.m. You can find a map of all events on nowarwithiran.org.
