Worcester Man Charged With Defacing Gun

Police got a report of "ShotSpotter activation" which led them to a man who, police say, had a defaced gun without a license.

WORCESTER, MA- A Worcester man is facing multiple gun charges after a ShotSpotter activation report led police to his location, where they said they found a defaced gun and no gun license.

Early Sunday morning, police got a ShotSpotter activation report, which detects and conveys the location of gunfire, at 98 Southgate Street. The report said a car was seen speeding in the area around the time the shots were heard and an officer nearby spotted the car parked at the corner of Grand and Cheney St, with a large group of people in and around it, according to police.

Information from the investigation into the incident brought officers to St. Peter's Parish where they saw Jesus Rivera-Diaz come out to the street from behind the church, according to police. Police said Rivera- Diaz looked extremely alarmed to see the officers and put his hand to his waistband as if trying to conceal a gun, and ran away.

As officer chased him Rivera-Diaz faced the officers while still holding his waistband and appeared to take something from it when officers first made contact with him, according to police. A gun fell from Rivera-Diaz's waistband and when he reached for it, officers were able to kick it away and place him under arrest.

The gun had a defaced serial number and Rivera-Diaz did not have a License to Carry firearms in Massachusetts.

Rivera-Diaz was placed under arrest for Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card, Possession of a Defaced Serial Number Firearm in a Felony, and Resisting Arrest.
