Worcester Seeks Artists For 32 New WooBox Utility Box Murals

Artists can submit up to five original designs for Worcester utility boxes.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester is opening a second round of its WooBox Art Project, with the city inviting local artists to submit designs to transform utility boxes into public art across the city.

The City of Worcester Cultural Development Division, in collaboration with the Worcester Cultural Coalition, announced the new call for artists for 32 new WooBoxes, including two that celebrate the newly appointed Poets Laureate.

Selected artists will receive $500 for each design selected by the committee, according to the announcement. The project theme is “Uniquely Worcester: Exploring Worcester’s Past and Present,” which encourages artists to create designs reflecting the city’s historic achievements, heritage and future.

The WooBox Art Project is intended to celebrate and promote local artists while giving them a chance to tell Worcester stories through public art, according to the announcement. Worcester-based artists or organizations will receive priority, and the opportunity is open to established and emerging artists, residents, and community organizations.

Applicants may submit up to five designs. Up to 29 designs will be selected, and the guidelines state that submissions must be original and free from derogatory imagery, political assertions, or advertising.

“These utility boxes, often overlooked, now serve as canvases for a shared and evolving story,” said artist Eamon Gillen. “I drew inspiration from the iconic three-decker homes that define Worcester’s neighborhoods and the communities where I grew up. It’s truly an honor to create public art in a place that played a significant role in shaping who I am and to give back to the community in a meaningful way.”

City Manager Eric D. Batista said the project helps strengthen neighborhoods while putting local creativity on display.

“Beautifying our neighborhoods through initiatives such as the WooBox Art Project creates a sense of place where all residents can feel like they belong,” Batista said. “It's an opportunity to showcase the creativity of our community while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of our streets.”

Cultural Development Officer Fabian Barracks pointed to the public response to the first round.

“The enthusiasm from residents, artists, and visitors showed just how impactful creative placemaking can be,” Barracks said. “We’re excited to once again provide opportunities for local artists to bring color, energy, and community pride to our public spaces.”

Applications must be submitted online or delivered to the Cultural Development Office at City Hall Room 409, 455 Main St., Worcester, MA 01608.

The application period is open now and closes Friday, June 19, 2026, at 5 p.m. Notification of acceptance is scheduled for July 17, 2026. More information is available on the WooBox Art Project webpage.
