Worcester Woman Rides In Bicycles Battling Cancer

The ride begins and ends in Marlborough.

WORCESTER, MA—Worcester resident Tammy Hanley, 42, is participating in Bicycles Battling Cancer for her eighth year this summer, riding miles to raise money for the American Cancer Society and awareness about cancer.

“I felt helpless and the Bicycles Battling Cancer ride allowed me to fight back against the disease,” said Hanley, who lost her dad to cancer, in a statement. “Each year seems to be a different challenge for me, adjusting to clipless pedals, ear issues, recovering from back surgery or just good old fashion nerves. Some people ask me why I keep riding endurance rides if I have to face an obstacle, and for me the answer is simple, because I still can. There are too many people fighting cancer who can't ride or do the things they loved to do, so until I can't do it, I will continue on.”

Bicycles Battling Cancer is a one-day, fully-supported ride that consists of 30-, 70-, and 100-mile scenic loop routes through central Massachusetts, said the announcement.

This year’s ride is set for Sunday, June 11, beginning and ending at Hillside School in Marlborough. All courses are fully monitored with support and gear wagons. Riders can select their choice of distance, and each participant is required to raise a minimum of $300. Anyone who is interested should call 1-800-227-2345, visit www.bicyclesbattlingcancer.org or email bicyclesbattlingcancer@cancer.org to register or learn more.
