WORCESTER, MA — The main fireworks event in central Massachusetts will blast off Thursday at East Park in Worcester alongside a larger family festival.

Worcester's Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will begin around 4 p.m. Thursday at East Park along Shrewsbury Street. The celebration begins with food and kids activities followed by music starting at 5 p.m.

"The Voice" contestant Cara Brindisi — a Shrewsbury native — will be the main act at the July 4 celebration.

Although there's rain in the forecast, the chance will be lower around fireworks time near 9:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

"A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm, then a slight chance of showers between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%," the forecast says.

Event organizer Discover Central MA is encouraging families to bring blankets, and to patronize nearby offerings along Shrewsbury Street, known as Worcester's "restaurant row."
