Worcester's Coes Reservoir Reopens, Preventative Treatment Closure Planned Monday

WORCESTER, MA — Coes Reservoir is open again following a cyanobacteria-related closure, although another temporary closure is planned for early next week.
The reservoir reopened Friday after being closed because of cyanobacteria in the water. Worcester officials said the reservoir will close again on Monday for preventative treatment.
The Monday closure is a planned treatment and is separate from the public health closure that prompted restrictions at the reservoir.
The city had closed Coes Reservoir after cyanobacteria was detected. The closure restricted recreational contact with the water while officials monitored conditions.
Cyanobacteria, sometimes called blue-green algae, can multiply rapidly and form blooms in lakes and ponds. Some blooms can produce toxins that pose health risks to people and animals, particularly through direct contact with or ingestion of affected water.
The reopening allows recreational activities to resume Friday. Residents should account for the separate closure on Monday while the preventative treatment is conducted.
Visitors should follow posted signs and any additional city guidance before entering the water or allowing pets near the shoreline.
