Wrong-Way OUI Driver Crashes Into 3 Cars, Including Cruiser: MSP

A trooper sustained minor injuries after the highway crashes.

SPRINGFIELD, MA — Two people, including a state police trooper, were injured when a wrong-way drunk driver struck three vehicles on I-91 Tuesday night, police said. The West Springfield man behind the wheel was arrested, but avoided injury despite his pickup truck rolling over.

Police said the suspect entered Longmeadow from Connecticut going northbound on 91 South around 10 p.m. He was driving in the breakdown lane, so the trooper put his cruiser in his lane in an effort to stop him.

Police said the suspect did not stop, hit the cruiser, struck two more vehicles, and flipped over.

Troopers removing the man from the car noticed "obvious signs of impairment," police said.

The trooper was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for minor injuries. The cruiser sustained major damage.

At least one of the drivers of the other vehicles sustained minor injuries.

The interstate was shut down until midnight.
