Mass. Teen Drowns Day After Prom, Week Before Graduation

An Oxford teen drowned this weekend while swimming with friends in Whitten Reservoir.

OXFORD, MA — An 18-year-old woman died while swimming at Whitten Reservoir in Douglas on Saturday.

Annie Krantz drowned a day after her prom and a week before graduation, reports CBS Boston.

Around 2:07 p.m. on Saturday Douglas police received a 911 call from a man saying that a female he had been swimming with went under the water at the reservoir off of Ridge Trail and did not surface. Police and the dive team responded within minutes and searched, finding Krantz about 45 minutes later at the bottom of the reservoir in about six feet of water, said police.

She was treated at the scene and brought to Harrington Hospital in Webster where she was pronounced dead.

Douglas police told Fox 25 news that the water was about 56 degrees, and when water is that cold, swimmers can cramp up quickly, making it difficult to swim.

This incident is being investigated by State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, the Douglas Police, and Massachusetts Environmental Police.
