Town-Owned Property Needs Additional Cleanup

Problems remain with property after cleanup, additional work begins.

Wrentham is continuing to work to remove pollutants from a piece of property it owns.

The Marra property, a piece of which borders Wampum Corner, has been the subject of town cleanup efforts.

The town hired engineering firm Fuss & O'Neill to remove soil contaminants from the site.

Town Administrator William Ketcham said post-cleanup testing found some residual pollutants.

"It's the same pesticide that has been the problem on the whole property," he said. "There was a small area where tests detected it in a large concentration."

The town, he said, contracted Fuss & O'Neill to run additional tests to determine the extent of that contamination. Those tests began earlier this week.

When the tests are completed, the selectmen will decide what action should be taken with the property.

Once the site is deemed clean, the town will examine several opportunities for its use. Ketcham said the selectmen will be looking into the possible effects of mining the land for gravel.
