Wrentham Playground Closes As Athletic Fields Construction Begins

WRENTHAM, MA — A playground in Wrentham will close this month as construction begins on new athletic fields in the complex.

The Jane D’Amico Playground is expected to close on Friday, while construction takes place at the William A. Rice Recreation Complex. Heavy equipment will operate near the playground at 54 Emerald St. during the project, the town said Wednesday.

Residents should avoid the construction area for safety. The town has not announced a reopening date and said it will notify the public when the playground is ready to reopen.

The work is part of a larger expansion intended to replace athletic fields that will be lost at the Sweatt Recreation Complex during the Roderick Elementary School replacement project, according to the town’s Rice Complex project page.

Plans call for two Little League baseball and softball fields, three multipurpose fields and a 120-space parking lot. The project also includes a roadway with emergency access and field lighting if funding allows, according to the town.

Wrentham awarded the construction project to Digger’s Landscaping. Town records show the company submitted a base bid of nearly $2.4 million.

The playground opened in 2020 and was named for Jane D’Amico, who served on the Wrentham Recreation Commission for 20 years and helped raise money for the Rice Complex.
