2 Dead In Crash With Amtrak Train In Southeast MI: Police

Police said a pickup truck tried crossing an active railroad track when the train smashed into the truck.

LAPEER COUNTY, MI — Two men were killed after their truck was hit by a train while crossing an active railroad track in Lapeer last Friday, according to police.

The crash happened at 10:26 p.m. Friday at the railroad crossing on South Main Street (M-24) near Cramton Park in Lapeer, according to police.

Police said 61-year-old Richard Griggs, of Lapeer, was driving a 2003 Chevy S-10 north on Michigan 24 and did not stop at the railroad crossing where an Amtrak train was approaching.

The train then smashed into the pickup truck, according to police.

Griggs, and his passenger, 39-year-old Marcus Griggs, also of Lapeer, were taken to McLaren Lapeer hospital where they both died, according to police.

Investigators said an Amtrak camera showed the train crossing was working properly with its crossing gates down when the truck tried crossing the tracks.

The Amtrak train was also sounding its horn prior to crossing the intersection, according to police.
