4 Horses Rescued From Freezing Pond After Ice Gives Away: Sheriff

No emergency responders​ were injured in the rescue.

CALHOUN COUNTY, MI — Officials rescued four horses from icy water after they broke through a pond Sunday morning in Calhoun County, according to the sheriff's office.

Officials said the horses escaped their enclosure and wandered onto an icy pond at Turtle Creek Golf Course in Newport Township.

The ice gave away and the horses became trapped in the shallow icy water, officials said.

Dive teams entered the water and worked with fire officials to manually pull each horse from the pond, officials said.

All four horses were safely pulled from the icy water and were able to walk away, officials said.

No emergency responders were injured in the rescue.

"The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office commends the quick action and teamwork demonstrated by all responding agencies, including Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority personnel, whose coordination played a critical role in the successful outcome of this rescue," officials said.
