8 Tornadoes Touched Down In MI During Severe Storms Tuesday Night: NWS

The tornadoes ranged from EF-0 to EF-1 with winds reaching up to 110 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters confirmed eight tornadoes landed in Michigan during severe storms Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Two of the tornadoes touched down in the Detroit area, impacting parts of Washtenaw and Wayne counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The strongest tornado developed at 1:44 a.m. near Jackson Avenue and Interstate 94 in Ann Arbor. The EF-1 moved through Veterans Memorial Park and nearby neighborhoods with winds topping at 110 miles per hour.

The 500-mile-wide tornado left a 1.7-mile trail of destruction that included numerous uprooted and snapped trees, large downed limbs and snapped stadium light poles.

Portions of an elementary school roof were also blown off, and additional straight-line winds destroyed part of the roof at Yost Ice Arena at the University of Michigan, the weather service said.

Another tornado touched down near the Allen Park and Lincoln Park border in Wayne County at 2:14 a.m.

The EF-1, with winds reaching up to 95 miles per hour, tore through the area, snapping trees and damaging homes and businesses, including windows, roofs and HVAC equipment, the weather service said.

It traveled about a third of a mile with a maximum width of 200 yards for roughly two minutes.

Forecasters confirmed six other tornadoes touched down across Michigan earlier that night.

An EF-1 tornado touched down in Albee Township in Saginaw County at 11:53 p.m. Tuesday and remained on the ground for five minutes. Its winds reached 105 miles per hour and moved nearly four miles with a maximum width of 880 yards.

The tornado uprooted several trees and destroyed outbuildings and homes, including one that lost most of its roof and garage walls, the weather service said.

Two other weaker EF-0 tornadoes also touched down in the area, including one near Durand in Shiawassee County around midnight. It moved roughly 1.7 miles and knocked down several trees and ripped siding from homes, the weather service said.

Three additional tornadoes touched down in west Michigan during the storms. Those tornadoes included two EF-1s and a weaker EF-0.

One of the EF-1s landed in Allegan County with winds topping near 100 miles per hour. A weaker EF-0 tornado also touched down in the county, moving nearly seven miles.

The other EF-1 touched down in Montcalm County and traveled 19 miles with winds reaching 110 miles per hour.

Officials said no injuries have been reported from any of the tornadoes.
