Prices for diesel gas were still above $6 on Monday, according to AAA.

Gas experts say the higher diesel costs can affect food costs, as farming and trucking vehicles typically use diesel gas.

"Higher fuel costs mean higher shipping costs for everything we buy," according to GasBuddy. "More expensive diesel hits farm budgets and drives up food costs."

Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy Patrick De Haan said the spike is mostly due to the temporary closure of multiple refineries in the Great Lakes area. Those closures are the result of the Iran war and the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.

Average gas prices for a regular gallon of gas inched down over the weekend but were still up 80 cents higher than last week, according to AAA.

Regular gas prices across Michigan were $4.86 on Monday. Prices in the metro Detroit area were slightly cheaper at $4.83, according to AAA.
