"I want to have impact. I want to do good work, but I'm also looking forward to taking a little bit of a break and thinking about it, not jumping right into something," Whitmer said.

Whitmer did say she has spoken to multiple people about her future plans, including former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan.

"That's the advice everyone says: 'Take a little bit of time,' and so that's what I'm going to do," Whitmer said.

The news comes as Michiganders are preparing to elect a new governor this year. Michigan's governorship is limited to just two-years.
