Police said a 12-year-old girl and her 13-year-old friend were riding scooters in the neighborhood when they saw three dogs in a home's front yard.

Police believe the three pit bull/mastiff dogs escaped from their kennel.

The dogs suddenly ran toward the girls, knocking the 12-year-old to the ground and attacking her, according to police.

Her 13-year-old friend ran to get help, according to police.

Police said a 31-year-old woman heard the girls screaming and ran to help. As she tried pulling the dogs off the child, police said they turned and attacked her.

That's when the dog's owner intervened and pulled the dogs from the woman, according to police.

The owner's son secured the dogs in the kennel, according to police.

The 12-year-old was picked up by her mother, who took her home to wait for an ambulance, according to police.

She was then airlifted to a hospital and later transferred to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, according to police.

The dog's owner, a 44-year-old woman, stayed with the injured woman until medics arrived to take her to the hospital, according to police.

Both the girl and woman suffered severe lacerations but were conscious and alert, and are expected to be ok, according to police.

Police returned the dogs to the owner, pending the outcome of the investigation. They will turn over their investigation to the Hillsdale County Prosecutor's Office for review of possible criminal charges.

The fate of the dogs will also be determined once the investigation is completed, according to police.
