Second MI Campground Closed Due To Wolf Activity

ISLE ROYALE, MI — Park officials have closed a second campground on Isle Royale due to wolf activity over the weekend.

The Duncan Narrows Campground will stay closed until at least July 31 after park officials said a wolf tore through a tent.

Officials said a wolf or wolves accessed the interior of a shelter by tearing, scratching and pushing through the screen. They also pulled clothing and other items out of the tent and chewed at a cooler stored improperly in the shelter.

There were no injuries during the incident, officials said.

The incident comes just after officials spotted an aggressive wolf at the Three Mile Campground earlier this month. Officials also closed that campground to at least Aug. 1.

Officials said improperly stored human food and trash are drawing the wolves to the campgrounds.

During the closure, officials will intensify their hazing efforts to deter wolves from the area. Those methods include loudly shouting, stomping, clapping, sounding airhorns and discharging paintball guns.

Officials plan to open both campgrounds on Aug. 1.
