"The island is unique in that there are no cars or chain hotels – instead, horse-drawn carriages and family-owned accommodations are the norm – so travelers can truly embrace the Lake Huron destination's small-town charm," U.S. News and World Report wrote.

Mackinac Island is best known for its summer tourist attractions, which include its beaches, horse-drawn carriage and a beautiful 8-mile bike ride around the island.

The island is also well known for its fudge, as well as several museums and tours of Fort Mackinac, which is open all summer.

Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio and Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota also made the U.S. News and Report list. You can see the top 21 ranking here.
