4 Injured In Crash On Mackinac Bridge In Northern MI: Police

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI — Four people were injured in a crash on the Mackinac Bridge in northern Michigan on Wednesday, according to police.

Police said multiple vehicles passed through the toll booths in the southbound lanes on Interstate 75 at 2:55 a.m.

After passing through the toll area, the cars quickly accelerated and began driving recklessly, according to police.

One of the vehicles then slammed into the back of another car near an active construction area on the bridge where southbound traffic is restricted to a single lane, according to police.

Four people were taken to a nearby hospital where two were in serious condition, according to police.

Two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

A 28-year-old Jamaican man was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, which is a felony offense.

He was placed in the county jail as charges were pending. Police added more charges are possible.

Investigators believe speed and alcohol played a role in the crash.

Police said the Jamaican man had been working and living seasonally in the area.
